How to understand the validity of a visa, number of entries and duration of stay?
The arrow 1 in the picture indicates the type of visa you are applying for.
The arrow 2 in the picture indicates the Validity of a visa, that is the period within which the visa holder is allowed to enter China. Unless specified by the issuing authority, the visa will take effect from the date of issuance and will expire at 24:00 Beijing time on the expiration date.
Take the picture as an example: This visa will take effect from April 10, 2025, and expire at 24:00 on July 10, 2025. You must enter mainland China before 24:00 on July 10, 2025. In order to avoid unexpected situations such as flight delays affecting your trip, it is recommended that you arrange entry in advance.
The arrow 3 in the picture indicates the number of entries, that is the number of times the visa holder is permitted to enter China within the visa’s validity.
Take the picture as an example: You can enter mainland China once between April 10, 2025 and July 10, 2025. If the number shown here is 2, it means you can enter China twice during the validity of the visa. If the number is M (M is the first letter of multiple), it means you can enter China multiple times during the validity of the visa.
The arrow 4 in the picture indicates the duration of stay, that is the longest period the visa holder is allowed to stay in China on each visit, and this is counted from the day following entry into China.
Take the picture as an example: If you enter China on April 10, 2025, you can stay in China for no more than 30 days, starting from April 11. If you enter China on July 10, 2025, you can stay in China for no more than 30 days, starting from July 11.
Kindly remind you: When all the permitted entries are used up, the visa is no longer valid. Even if there are still unused entries, the visa is no longer valid if the validity has already expired. In either case, the visa holder should apply for a new visa if another visit to China is planned.
The holder of a visa is eligible to enter China at any time prior to the expiry of its validity (allowed to enter China before midnight Beijing Time on the last date of its validity) provided that permitted entries on the visa have not been used up; the holder’s planned duration of stay in China must not exceed the duration stated in the visa.
